Chania Water Quality 2026: Official Results and Restricted Swimming Zones
The Directorate of Public Health and Social Care of the Region of Crete has issued the official decisions regarding coastal water suitability across the Chania Prefecture for the 2026 summer season.
Following systematic monthly sampling conducted across 61 coastal points during 2025 and updated in 2026, the regional authorities have classified the marine waters of Chania as being of excellent quality. Continuous testing will remain active throughout the current swimming period to ensure safety standards are strictly maintained.
While the vast majority of the coastline is fully approved for swimming, local health regulations restrict public access in specific commercial, infrastructure, and industrial zones.
Designated Prohibited Swimming Zones
In accordance with national health legislation, swimming is prohibited within the following defined areas across the Chania region:
Ports and Maritime Infrastructure
Swimming is strictly forbidden in all major and minor commercial ports, anchorages, marinas, shipyards, and ship-dismantling facilities within the Chania Prefecture.
Stormwater Outlets
A mandatory restricted buffer zone extends 50 metres on either side of any stormwater drainage outlet discharging into the sea.
Industrial Stretch (Vyrsodepsia)
Swimming is prohibited along the coastal strip extending 200 metres west of the Vyrsodepsia area (Lakkon & Ploiarchon 1866 Street) to 200 metres east of the end of Agia Kyriaki Street.
- Note: Kouloura Beach, located within the Municipality of Chania, is explicitly exempt from this restriction and remains open and safe for swimming.
Wastewater Treatment Discharge Lines
A restricted zone of 200 metres on either side of the sea outlet pipelines applies to the following locations:
- Koumpelis: Surrounding the primary wastewater pipeline of the Municipality of Chania.
- Kalyves: Surrounding the local settlement sewage treatment pipeline.
- Kissamos: Surrounding the municipal treatment outlet pipeline.
- Palaiochora: Surrounding the southern settlement treatment system pipeline.
- Gerani: Surrounding the Chania–Kolympari regional treatment plant pipeline.
Compliance and Local Enforcement
All coastal areas within the Chania Prefecture that are not explicitly listed in the restricted zones above are officially designated as safe and open for public swimming.
Local municipal authorities are legally required to post visible “No Swimming” signage along all restricted boundaries within their jurisdictions, which are monitored by local Port Authorities. Visitors are advised to look for designated signage when swimming near infrastructure or river mouths.
