Navigating Parking and Driving in Chania

Driving directly into the centre of Chania requires extra attention. Access for vehicles inside the Old Town is strictly prohibited, while large sections of the surrounding city centre have been pedestrianised, with all parking banned.

On-street parking across the town is extremely limited, whether free or paid. The free open-air car park at Koum Kapi fills up very early in the day, while private paid lots (both outdoor and covered) reach capacity quickly during peak hours.

Important Warning: Never park on streets marked with blue lines. These spaces are strictly reserved for permanent residents, and local traffic police regularly issue fines and remove license plates.

The Municipal Park & Ride Solution

To alleviate congestion and simplify access for residents and visitors, the Municipality of Chania operates two official Park & Ride open-air facilities for 2026.

Drivers can park their vehicles free of charge and utilise complimentary electric mini-buses that run a continuous loop into the commercial core and historical perimeter.

Shuttle Timetables (Effective Season 2026)

The electric shuttle service operates from Monday to Saturday. Please note that shuttle services do not run on Sundays or Public Holidays (though parking spaces remain accessible).

1. Kladissos Parking Hub

• Monday to Saturday: Buses depart every 20 minutes, starting from 07:00 continuously until the final departure at 00:40 midnight.
• Sundays & Holidays: No shuttle service.

2. Markopoulou Park (Ag. Ioannis) Hub

• Monday to Saturday: Buses depart every 20 minutes, starting from 07:15 continuously until the final departure at 01:10 AM.
• Sundays & Holidays: No shuttle service.

Local Advice for Drivers

• Arriving from the West (Kissamos, Agia Marina, Platanias): Use the Kladissos facility. It is located right at the city’s western entrance, saving you from navigating downtown bottlenecks.
• Arriving from the East or South (Souda, Airport, Rethymno): The Markopoulou Park facility in the Agios Ioannis district offers the most direct access without entering the narrow central grid.
