If you’re visiting the beautiful city of Chania in Crete and suddenly need to find a public toilet, don’t stress. While public restrooms in the city are not always easy to spot and often lack comfort, there are a few reliable options, most of which are free.
Public Toilets Chania – Where to Go When Nature Calls in the Heart of Crete
Old Harbour Entrance
One of the best places to go is Zampeliou Street, right at the entrance to the Old Venetian Harbour. The newly renovated facility, reopened in 2024 by the Chania Port Authority, includes three rooms: one for men, one for women, and one fully accessible toilet for people with disabilities. Each section is modern and functional, equipped with new sanitation fixtures, motion-sensor taps and hand dryers. Showers are also available inside the building. What makes this WC truly stand out is the presence of a cleaning staff during daytime hours, helping to keep everything in top condition.
In the heart of the Venetian Harbour
Just a few minutes away, you’ll find another excellent public restroom on 1 Michail Afentoulief Street, in the heart of the Venetian Harbour. The Chania Port Authority fully refurbished this facility, following the same high standards as the one on Zampeliou Street. It includes separate toilets for men and women, an additional accessible room for disabled visitors, modern fittings, and shower facilities. Municipal cleaning staff maintain the space daily, making it one of central Chania’s most reliable bathroom options.
Talos Square
Not far from there, right at the beginning of the harbour, you’ll find the public toilet at Talos Square. This semi-underground facility has one entrance divided into two rooms for men and women. However, there is no accessible toilet for disabled individuals, and the conditions are far from ideal. Typically, there is no toilet seat, no paper, and often the doors do not lock properly. Plus, it’s open 24 hours a day and is usually kept relatively clean. Still, we wouldn’t recommend it unless no other washroom near you is available.
Chania Town Hall
For those walking around town during weekday mornings, the Chania Town Hall (Dimarchio) also provides public toilets for visitors. These are usually available from morning until early afternoon, Monday through Friday, except during public holidays. Although not widely known to tourists, they are clean and centrally located — a proper backup if you’re nearby.
Other public toilets in Chania
If you’re travelling through Crete by bus, the Chania KTEL station offers free access to public WC facilities. They’re simple, but they serve their purpose well. Likewise, at Chania International Airport, you’ll find clean and modern restrooms inside the terminal—a much better option if you arrive or depart.
Elsewhere in the city, there is a public washroom at the Tombs of Venizelos, but its condition is inferior, and we do not recommend using it. The same goes for the Municipal Market of Chania (Agora) and the Park of Peace and Friendship — both have closed public toilets due to maintenance and renovation.

If none of these options are near you, a local tip always works anywhere in Crete: step into one of the many takeaway cafés scattered throughout the city and the mainland. You can usually access the bathroom or WC without problem by buying a quick coffee, juice, or snack. Most places are friendly, and this trick works exceptionally well when exploring the old town or busy neighbourhoods.
