Souda Port (Chania Ferry & Cruise Terminal): Comprehensive Local Guide

Located roughly 6 km east of Chania city centre, Souda Port serves as the primary commercial, passenger ferry, and cruise gateway for Western Crete. Souda Bay itself forms Crete’s largest natural harbour, stretching roughly 15 km in length and up to 4 km in width. Its unique geographic orientation and deep waters make it one of the safest all-year-round maritime anchorages in the Mediterranean.

As a resident of Chania, I created this detailed guide to help you navigate ferry crossings to Athens (Piraeus) and Milos, understand port transfers to Chania Town and Rethymno, and plan smooth cruise terminal arrivals.

Looking for other ferry routes in western Crete?
While Souda is the main commercial and passenger hub connecting Chania to Piraeus, the Port of Kissamos also offers scheduled ferry connections to Piraeus, the Peloponnese (Gythio), and the island of Kythira, serving as a key gateway for western Crete.

Daily Ferries: Athens (Piraeus), Milos Island & Fleet Overview

Currently, passenger ferry connections between Souda Port and Athens operate exclusively via Anek Lines (a member of the Attica Group, alongside Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, and Superfast Ferries). The route features two modern, large-capacity vessels: the Elyros and the Kissamos.

Both ships offer extensive passenger amenities, including comfortable dining areas, private cabins, lounge seating, and large garage decks for transporting motorbikes, cars, campervans, and small boats.

Timetables & Sailing Schedules

  • Standard Overnight Crossings: Ferries depart Chania (Souda) at 21:30 and arrive in Piraeus between 9 hours 15 minutes and 9 hours 25 minutes later, depending on the vessel. Ferries departing from Athens (Piraeus) leave at 22:00.
  • Intermediate Stop at Milos Island: The overnight route connects Chania directly to the Cyclades. The ferry reaches Milos at approximately 02:10 when departing from Chania, and at 02:35 when departing from Piraeus.
  • Summer Daytime Express Routes: From early July until the end of August, Anek Lines operates additional daytime sailings. These ferries depart simultaneously from Chania and Piraeus at 10:00 AM and arrive at their destination by 18:00 (6:00 PM), without intermediate stops in Milos.

Ticket Pricing & Concessions

Standard deck-passage tickets start at €52.50. Special discount rates apply across Cretan lines for children, university students, large families (polyteknoi), military conscripts, and passengers with disabilities (PRM).

While ticket kiosks operate within the port area, the passenger ferry dock lacks an enclosed passenger terminal. It offers outdoor open-air ticketing booths, WC facilities, and designated parking.

Local Insider Tips for a Smooth Journey

  1. Book High-Season Ferry Tickets in Advance: Although on-site kiosks sell tickets, passenger demand peaks sharply from June to September and during Greek holiday weekends. Book your vehicle and cabin tickets well in advance online to secure your preferred slot.
  2. Departing from Piraeus (Gate E3): Ferries bound for Chania depart from Gate E3 at Piraeus Port. During summer peak hours, arrive at least 90 minutes before departure if boarding with a vehicle. You can utilise the Port Authority’s (OEP) free shuttle bus service connecting all main gates at Piraeus.
  3. Immediate Transport Connections: Bus transfers align precisely with incoming ferry arrivals. Walk directly off the ramp towards the designated bus pick-up bay to catch the direct coaches to Rethymno or downtown Chania without unnecessary delays.
